Water-wise around the house

Water-wise around the houseThe U.S. population nearly doubled between 1950 and 2000; however, the demand for water during that period more than tripled. Americans now use an average of 100 gallons of water every day, enough to fill 1,600 drinking glasses.¹

With increased demand comes increased prices, not to mention the threat to our water reserves and environment. The Chesapeake Bay Program estimates that only 4 of those 100 gallons are actually necessary.

Everything You Know About Going Green is Wrong

What if that brand new Prius is worse for the environment than a 1995 Chevy Suburban, despite getting 38 more miles to the gallon?

What if that sirloin, shipped to the steakhouse from a newly deforested pasture in the Amazon, means less to the global climate than a hill of individually wrapped jellybeans?

What if using that old avocado-green clothes washer turned out to be better for the environment than the brand new Energy Star model?

These are the types of thoughts one thinks after reading two recent reports by Joshuah Stolaroff, who could do far more to turn "going green" on its head than your average faceless bureaucrat.

5 Ways to Protect Yourself From ... Chicken

Be thankful that turkey is the bird of choice for Thanksgiving, because Consumer Reports has just released the results of a startling study about America's favorite bird: Two-thirds of chicken tested in 22 states is contaminated with either salmonella or campylobacter, the leading causes of food-borne illness.

(One in 10 was contaminated with both. And most were contaminated with at least one antibiotic-resistant strain of bacteria.)

More than 3 million food-borne infections are documented each year (with many more likely going undocumented), 25,000 people are hospitalized and 500 die from these two bugs.

The results point to the problems of industrial farming, which produces cheap chickens in unhealthy conditions. Hangars are jam-packed and the routine use of antibiotics to ward off poultry illness produces drug-resistant strains of bacteria that can result in hard-to-treat human illnesses.

Three Reasons Hanukkah is a Green Holiday

Hanukkah 2009 begins at sundown on Friday, December 11. A couple years ago, The Daily Green interviewed Rabbis Arthur Waskow and Jeff Sultar of the Philadelphia-based Shalom Center, who were working to make Hanukkah a holiday focused on sustainability, with a "Green Menorah" campaign. Their teachings are just as relevant today.

“Green” Means More Than Just Money When Choosing A College
This time of year, thousands of budding young students (and their parents) flock to college campuses across the U.S.

Armed with notepads and college guidebooks, they weave through university grounds on tours, invade dorms on recruiting visits, and congregate in the cafeteria to share impressions and rate what they've seen.

As students and their parents inspect every aspect of the institution with a fine-toothed comb, most colleges have armies of campus representatives strategically placed to answer any question, from "What academic programs do you offer?" to "How good are the parties?"

But another question is now being posed by this new generation of college-bound students -- the answer to which could be a deciding factor for a growing number of applicants: "What is your campus sustainability plan?"

Future leaders know green is here to stay

"You in” for green kindness?

The end of the year is a traditional time for giving back to the community. This year, Yahoo! encourages you to spread the word about your good deeds through the new "You In?" campaign. Tell the world what great, green acts of kindness you've done recently and encourage others to join in.

The project is happening at http://kindness.yahoo.com/ -- on this site, you can type in a status message sharing what good deed you're up to. This message will be displayed on an interactive global map at this site.

Inspire others (or get ideas) by posting your eco-friendly acts of goodwill, such as these:

- I donated old towels to use as animal bedding at the Humane Society. You In?
- I gave a reusable shopping bag to the person in line behind me at the grocery store before the cashier could say "paper or plastic?"
- I bought weather-stripping & helped install it in the windows of an elderly couple's house on my block. You in?

Climate Change: Profit Or Problem?

The popular agricultural press has taken the USDA to task over its position that the Climate Change legislation (HR 2454) will have little impact on agriculture. USDA’s analysis of the House-passed legislation, which is now in the US Senate for consideration, originated in the Office of the Chief Economist. The study says, “In summary, USDA’s analysis shows that the agricultural sector will have modest costs in the short-term and net benefits – perhaps significant net benefits – over the long-term.” But how did it come to that conclusion?

The USDA analysis is based on energy cost estimates of the Environmental Protection Agency, applied to agricultural supply, demand, prices, and net farm income over the near term (2012-2018), medium term (2027-2033) and long term 2042-2048.) USDA says its estimates are predicated on several assumptions:

what do u feel about green environment
Indeed, compared to last year’s event, UK Aware ‘09 hosted 40 percent more exhibitors and a few thousand additional visitors – an impressive feat given both the faltering economy, and the fact that buying and selling additional goods as part of a movement ostensibly dedicated to reduction presents something of a paradox.

Of Buying Green and Being Green
Last weekend, several thousand Britons gathered at UK Aware 09, “the U.K.’s only green lifestyle exhibition,” for tips on leading more climate-friendly lives.

One of the visitors was Will Rayward-Smith, a Cambridge University student who made the trip to London to survey the field of green businesses and organizations. “Some of the ideas here are great,” he said — though he added that some businesses seemed only interested in cashing in on the current wave of green popularity. “It is surprising how successful they are becoming,” Mr. Rayward-Smith said.

In one corner of the expo, Colin Murtagh, the founder of CompoViz, was selling arboreal-themed compost bins which allow buyers to “recycle in style.” Mr. Murtagh admitted that composting could be done equally efficiently with “just four pieces of cardboard,” he said, but his products do offer an aesthetic advantage.

Climate Bill Could Override Regional Efforts

By Kate Galbraith

Tucked deep into Tuesday’s hefty climate bill draft is an innocuous-sounding sentence:

‘‘Notwithstanding section 116, no State or political subdivision thereof shall implement or enforce a cap that covers any capped emissions emitted during the years 2012 through 2017.”

Recession Cuts Europe’s Carbon Emissions

By Jad Mouawad

As negotiators from the world’s biggest economies negotiate a new climate treaty to replace the Kyoto Protocol, they might find little comfort in this fact: There’s nothing like a crippling recession to reduce carbon emissions.

Last year, as the economy slowed down, emissions of these global-warming gases dropped by 6 percent in Europe, according to a report by Point Carbon, a market analysis firm. European countries, which have established a market mechanism to curb carbon emissions, had been struggling to meet their targets before the economic downturn.

Meat vs. Climate: The Debate Continues

At least since a 2006 United Nations report asserted that livestock is responsible for a full 18 percent of greenhouse gas emissions — a higher percentage than that caused by transportation — a debate over meat consumption and climate change has been cooking.

The latest round involves a recent editorial in the Archives of Internal Medicine by Barry M. Popkin, a professor of nutrition at the University of North Carolina. In it, Mr. Popkin revisits several studies linking meat not just with heart disease and other health issues, but also with worldwide consumption of energy and water resources — and global warming.

Saudi Minister Urges Caution on Renewable Energy

Fears about energy security, and last year’s oil price spike, have sparked a serious push for renewable energy in the United States, the world’s largest oil consumer.

The trend is apparently making the world’s largest oil producer, Saudi Arabia, nervous.

Speaking at a major energy conference earlier this month, Ali Al-Naimi, the Saudi oil minister, offered an impassioned defense of oil, which he called “an enabler of progress and prosperity.” He cautioned that the current economic crisis — and the uncertainties over future oil consumption — could force producers to trim their supplies, and hence could cause a new price shock.

Ontario Introduces Green Stimulus Funds

With the province reeling from steep manufacturing employment declines, the Ontario government introduced a $24 billion stimulus budget on Thursday that includes $593 million in green-economy spending, as well as $2.6 billion for transit projects, mostly in the Greater Toronto region.

While Ontario’s 1.1 percent year-over-year job decline through January 2009 is well below the rate in the United States of 2.9 percent, the province’s export-oriented manufacturing sector has contracted by 11.1 percent, comparable to losses felt in states such as Indiana and Ohio.

Cape Wind Navigates Shifts in Market

The controversial and long-delayed Cape Wind project — which could become the first offshore wind farm in the United States — is inching forward.

The next milestone is a decision by the Interior Department about whether to issue a lease for the project (something that Interior Secretary Ken Salazar discussed during an interview with The New York Times last week).

Cutting Carbon Dioxide, Not Profits
As the momentum grows to limit carbon emissions, some critics, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, are warning about the high cost of climate policies on the economy.

But according to Richard Moss, who heads the climate program at the World Wildlife Fund, many companies would actually benefit from reducing their carbon emissions by lowering their energy costs.

Going ‘Green’ Leads To Lean Times
The front-page article “EPA ready to control greenhouse emissions; Proposed finding could widen regulatory agency’s reach, a move opposed by industry” (3/24, A-1) is alarming, to say the least. President Obama’s EPA is ready to say that carbon dioxide is basically poisonous, and all “greenhouse gas” emissions should be and will be regulated. Congress will also get involved with actual legislation. This is all in response to the Bush administration, which “sidestepped” the issue.
